Cap Haitien has many restaurants – here are some. All seem to take American money and credit cards. Please don't order lambi (conch) - they are endangered!

Cap Deli - This restaurant is along the main road Buccaneer (Blvd du Cap-Haitien) that runs along the bay and port and as a pizza and burger joint is a good place for lunch within walking distance of Hotel Roi Christophe. It has covered patio seating upstairs with views of the port, or dining inside. See menu photos, lots of vegetarian options, slowish service but interesting views for waiting.

Lolos - Also within walking distance of Hotel Roi Christophe, Lolo’s has outdoor partially covered seating in a nice ambiance of Haiti art and outdoor lighting – a nice place for dinner. They make their own pasta! I’ve had the flatbread, and pasta with alfredo sauce, but my favorite was the pumpkin spheres because they are so different. They are gooey melted cheese balls with a pumpkin puree coating. Because there is only 3 and they are rich, they would be better with a salad, or small side of pasta. Auberge Villa Cana – Walk through the hotel property towards the back and you will come to the restaurant (see this post for hotel info). I didn’t take a photo of the menu but remember it was typical Haitian food, and maybe burgers, with not many vegetarian options. The Haitian spaghetti with no meat was very good, and they have juices. Typical slow service.

Lea Market – This is a relatively new modern grocery store on Rue 5 Blvd (see facebook page) that has a deli (sandwiches and juices) and western-style foods (imported mainly from Europe) – cheese and dairy products, wine, good chocolate, packaged and canned foods. It is very clean. They don’t give goudes as change if you pay in American dollars, but you can use a credit card!

Hotel Roi Christophe restaurant - The restaurant has a nice setting on a covered porch in front of the hotel. They offer burgers and sandwiches, appetizers such as the mozarella and tomatoes pictured, typical plates of seafood, chicken, and goat, and ice cream for dessert! My cheese sandwich and french fries were good. Please don't order the lambi/conch - it is engangered! Service wasn't too slow.

Petionville restaurants

Kokoye Restaurant

During a stay at the Allamanda Hotel I ate at Macdoos and Kokoye.  The Lebanese restaurant Macdoos is about 500 ft away from Allamanda on Rue Oge.  It had great food, but loud music and a lot of people on a Friday night.  Most of the customers looked Lebanese. Kokoye is more relaxed and has outdoor seating and good pizza. On Saturday nights the band Extase is on stage. They play a combination of Haitian and Cuban/Latin music - very enjoyable and not so loud you couldn't have conversation. I also visited the Best Western restaurant Le Michel for Saturday morning coffee before heading to the nearby Galeried'art Collection Flamboyant at 9 Darguin.

Allamanda Hotel

I had the pleasure of staying at the Allamanda Hotel in Petionville for 7 nights, 2 different buildings and 3 different rooms as I traveled between the coast and Kenscoff.  The hotel operates out of 3 different buildings near the corner of Rue Oge and Rue Metellus. They serve complimentary breakfast in the restaurant Aioli at the main building at the southwest corner. Aioli provides a large space for meetings etc. The dinner menu doesn’t have a lot of vegetarian choices, but the owner helped me select a Greek salad and bannann peze with pickliz, all was very good. The building on the northeast corner has 7 rooms and is great for a group as it has a full kitchen and a common area/lobby. All the rooms were clean with wi-fi, air conditioning and hot water! The hotel is near the Lebanese restaurant Macdoos, and a short walk from the restaurants Quartier Latin and Kokoye next to Place Boyer.

Restaurant – Les Jardins du Mupanah

 Behind the Musée du Panthéon National (MUPANAH, National Pantheon Museum) in Port au Prince (near the fallen palace) is the restaurant Les Jardins du Mupanah, on Av. de la Republique near the Palace of Finance being built.  The museum and restaurant both have their own parking lots.  The restaurant looks like a glass box and has a little water garden alongside it.  It is very open and inviting inside, with a bar and museum gift shop.  My 10 students and I used the restaurant as a transfer stop on our way to Furcy.  Our van from the central plateau dropped us off and while we waited for the van to Furcy, the students went to the museum while I waited with our gear that the staff let us pile in the corner of the restaurant.  We ordered lunch as soon as we arrived, and it was served on time when the students returned from the museum.  I drank my cherry juice while I waited with our gear and the waitress gave me some rolls and real butter.  The menu offers traditional Haitian food served in a fusion sort of way.  Being a vegetarian, I ordered the Aztec salad without chicken.  It was like a taco salad, with plantain chips instead of tortilla chips.  See photos of the menu below.  Salads and sandwiches were around $10US, while dinners were $10 - $15US.  Fruit juice was $3US.  Added to the bill was 10% tax and a 10% service fee that the waiter said was for the kitchen, not for him!  I have been to the museum twice and never knew this restaurant was behind it.  I will definitely go again if I can.

Chalydath Resto, Pignon

The drive from the university to Pignon is now only 10 minutes since Rt. Nationale 3 has been graded in preparation for paving (as it was 6 years ago before the money and motivation to pave disappeared).  So we went there for Sunday lunch to eat at a new restaurant, Chalydath (219, Ave. Notre Dame), named after the owner's daughters and wife).  It is really good and has a variety of food and drinks, so please help keep it open!  I wanted pizza but that takes an hour, so I had a cheese sandwich grilled in a panini machine.  My friends had fish, goat, and chicken, all served with picklez, fries, veggies, or fried plantain.  They gave us an appetizer of cheese melted on bread, with tomato.  The juice of the day was grenadine (passionfruit).  They even have an espresso maker for Rebo coffee drinks such as mochas, frapacinos, and a funky monkey with peanut butter.  As usual, stay away from the endangered conch.  Chalydath is a large restaurant with an upper level that would be good for a meeting or party.

American friends of mine in Haiti occasionally talk about the ‘Embassy restaurant that has sushi.’  I finally got to go there, and was surprised at how close it is to the house I stay in when I fly in and out of Haiti.  Apparently the residents go there often, but had never mentioned it to me!  La Fouchet is located on Blvd. 15 Octobre, Tabarre 43, near the US Embassy and the large MSC construction store.  It is on the property of a hotel/apartment complex called Executive Villas.  Park and follow the sign back to the restaurant.  Seating is open air under a roof and by the pool.  The vegetarian Caterpillar Rolls were excellent (California roll with avocado, cream cheese, and tempura onion).  I also had passion fruit juice and flan for dessert.  My friend had a shrimp dish with fried plantain and ice cream.  They also have breakfast, steak, burgers, pizza, pasta, and some Mediterranean dishes (for the Jordanian UN?).  Prices were reasonable for a nice meal.  Service was fast for Haiti!  I would definitely go back, especially after almost 2 months of rice and beans.
